Taylor Swift The 1989 World Tour Philadelphia

Once again Taylor Swift does it again and puts on an amazing show. Friday and Saturday nights, I spent a few hours with Taylor at Lincoln Financial Field for her two sold-out hometown shows.

It all began back in November when tickets went on sale for the 1989 World Tour. I was in the midst of figuring out if I was definitely going to study abroad in London for the summer. I saw the tentative dates for the program and decided I wanted to go see Taylor again in Philly no matter, so I bought tickets for both nights and hoped everything worked out {and it did!!}.

I have been so busy this summer with working at Sesame, still helping with Philadelphia magazine events, a few concerts and still trying to spend time with my friends and family that Taylor’s concerts sprang up so quickly!! About two weeks before the concerts I started brainstorming ideas for t-shirts and decided to make 1989 lyric shirt and one with just a single line from “Out of the Woods” {as seen in my previous post}.

On Friday, I left the house super early with my friend Jill and headed down to the stadium. Since we got there so early we walked around the venue, bought shirts and went in the back where performers enter the stadium. The security guards told us Taylor would be arriving soon, and we knew when we finally did because they waved in two black SUVs without stopping them for a security check. Afterwards, we went back to the front of the venue and visited the radio stations and took lots of pictures before heading to the floor entrance. Doors opened at 5pm, and we walked into the concourse and visited the Xfinity and Keds booths for photos and small 1989 giveaways. The line for the Taylor Nation booth was so long and extended past several sections but we decided to wait for the official picture and missed the first opener Shawn Mendes.

Once we got the picture, we rushed onto floor to see Vance Joy perform. I am a huge fan of Vance especially after seeing him at the Radio 104.5 Birthday Show. He performed “Mess is Mine,” “Georgia,” a cover of “Stay with Me” and of course “Riptide.” As usual Vance was perfect and so thankful to play in front of such a big audience. I also bought his signed CD from one of the merch stands!

While waiting for Taylor, I spotted actress and the real Olivia Benson, Mariska Hargitay in the VIP area. She waved back at me as I took pictures from the gate. Then the security guard said Taylor’s mom would be in that area too and sure enough Mama Swift arrived shortly after.

After a little more waiting, “Feel So Close” by Calvin Harris played, and it was time for Taylor’s set. Once the lights went down the stadium went crazy and suddenly everyone’s light up bracelets were lighting up and changing with every beat. Swift appeared from under the stage in a sparkly jacket, black crop top and purple flowy skirt. She strutted across the stage with all her dancers close by her side. After her opening song of “Welcome to New York,” she paused in the center of the stage and just smiled at the audience for a solid three minutes and all you could hear was the screams and cheers of the crowd. Then Swift welcomed everyone to The 1989 World Tour and said, “We may be in the great state of Pennsylvania, but we began our story in New York.” Then just like she mentioned in interviews, she sang every single song off her album plus a couple from her other albums.

Between songs Taylor is also known for giving background about the song, why she wrote it and how she felt in the moment. She really connects with the audience. This tour she gave long, inspiration talks about love, moving on and how music is a great coping mechanism. She wishes “in relationships you only had two options. The two options in a relationship you either leave or stay” before she sang “All You Had to Do Was Stay.” Before “Clean” she told the audience that even when you go though “endless rainy days that are never going to get better first of all they will and second of all to be very clear and realizing what you are and what you are not. You are not someone else’s opinion of you that doesn’t know you.”

My favorite part of the show was Taylor’s slower songs. I loved when she went to the B stage {at the end of her main stage} and was lifted above the audience for her acoustic set. She sang “You Are In Love,” “Clean” and a new version of “Love Story.” Her acoustic songs let out her raw emotion and are so beautiful. “Clean” is also one of my favorite songs off the album, so it was great to hear it live.

Taylor is also one for surprises. In past tours, her special guests have included Selena Gomez, Sara Bareilles, Gary Lightbody, Neon Trees and several others. On Friday night, Taylor did a while speech on how much she loves Philly and wanted to surprise us and brought out special guest Echosmith who sang “Cool Kids” with her. The surprises weren’t over though as Swift also announced during “Style” that model Cara Delevingne and actress Mariska Hargitay, who plays Olivia Benson on Law & Order SVU were also surprise guests. The three ladies strutted down the catwalk and sang and danced at the end of the stage. During “Style,” I ran over towards the B stage pit to take a few pictures and the security guard let me in, so I was about five feet from Taylor!!!! It was the coolest thing to be so close to her, and I hope to be that close again!

For her Saturday show, Taylor had Rachel Platten come on stage and sing “Fight Song. Then Mariska Hargitay also came out during “Style.”

Taylor’s concerts are always amazing performances. Between the lights, costumes and dancers, it is amazing to watch. On Saturday when I had my press pass and was in the pit, I got to meet two of her dancers,  Austin and Christian and her guitar player, Paul Sidoti, who I previously met during her Speak Now World Tour.

At the end of the show, Taylor shared her love of Philly and how it’ll always be her hometown and promised to come back soon. I am so glad I went to both Philadelphia shows and am trying to see her in London and Dublin too this month.

  1. Hi! I was wondering what time you got there and what time Taylor drove in! Also what time the concert started!

    Thank you! ❤

    1. Hello! I got to the arena super early around 12pm and she got there about 2pm ish I think. The concert began at 6pm I think. Which show are you going to? The times may differ because of the number of openers she has for different cities.
